A Word From The CEO
Here you will find the steps of our production process, since the production of fingerlings until distribution.

Production of Fingerlings

Mar & Terra's breeding laboratory is located in the city of Bandeirantes, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul and was especially designed for pintado and cachara breeding.
Our laboratory staff is composed by 30 employees who live in the city of Bandeirantes, where they are trained.
Mar & Terra has a breeding stock which is individually identified with the use microchips. This allows us to track the development of each animal, to evaluate its reproductive efficiency and progenesis, and to plan the matings for the genetic enhancement program. Currently, we are in the second generation of genetically enhanced breeders.
Every mating is carefully planned and registered in order to guarantee the traceability of fingerlings.
We produce our own feed which is formulated to meet the nutritional requirements of the fish stock.
Our fingerling production is divided into stages as to guarantee that the specificities of each period are fully met. Methodologies that prioritize the nutritional quality with feed formulated to meet the needs of each stage, so making our fingerlings immunogically compentent against the challenges placed by the production system.
We produce to supply our partners with high quality fingerlings that can be fed with dry feed.
We are constantly enhancing our production technology, aiming at the excellence in the production of fingerlings in a sustainable way.

Outgrowing

The outgrowing process takes place in two farms located in the city of Itaporã, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, that together have more than 132 hectares of water surface. They are exclusively used to aquaculture and produce native fish of the Pantanal region, being the Pintado the most important one. Mar & Terra also counts on 10 independent producers that receive free technical assistance from the company and have the purchase of their production guaranteed by contract.
The fish are farmed in dug tanks in the semi-intensive production system and fed with balanced feed.
Everything starts with the reception of fingerlings which takes place into stages, allowing the standardization of the batches and optimizing the use of the farm area.
The production is monitored and controlled with a software that keeps handling and feeding information of all outgrowing stages, so guaranteeing traceability.
Mar & Terra stands out for producing fish in harmony with the environment, guaranteeing that the water that returns to the river is of good quality and the respect for the fauna of the region, for example, the Tuiuiu, symbol of the Pantanal.
The company also has a production unit in the state of Rondonia, where native fish of the Amazon basin, such as the Pirarucu and the Tambaqui, are farmed by 27 independent producers under the coordination of the State government.

Processing

The Mar & Terra processing unit in the city of Itaporã, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, is located in an area of 1900 m² and is one of the most modern in the country.
The fish are transported live in clear water tanks under strict temperature control to the processing unit where they undergo a resting period to reduce stress. They are then harvested, eviscerated, cut and chilled/frozen and packed.
The production process is carried out by a highly trained staff in fish technology and totally monitored and inspected through the HACCP program (Hazard Analysis of Critical Control Points) and the 18 elements established by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, which are under constant on site surveillance of official veterinaries of the Federal Inspection Service (SIF 2985).

Logistics and Transport

Mar & Terra uses three different means of transport: road, water and air transportation. Domestic market distribution is made in modern refrigerated trucks that permit the transportation of both frozen and chilled products. Mar & Terra products are found in the states of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Espirito Santo, Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul, Mato Grosso do Sul, Bahia and Pernambuco.
As for exports, chilled cuts are sent using air transportation and frozen products are exported in reefers. The routes are optimized and a rigorous temperature control is kept during the entire journey.
